The firebox is where the fire actually lives, which makes it the most thermally abused masonry in the house. Firebrick and refractory mortar are engineered for that abuse, but not forever: joints crumble, bricks crack, and gaps open that let heat reach framing that was never meant to meet it. A tired firebox rarely looks alarming from the couch. Up close, with a light, it usually tells a different story.
What firebox damage looks like
Crumbling white joints between firebricks, cracked or shifted brick faces, gaps at the back wall or where the firebox meets the hearth, and mortar dust collecting after each fire. None of it means the fireplace is done for; all of it means the protective envelope is thinning. The risk is not usually drama tonight, it is heat transfer over many fires reaching combustible framing behind the masonry, which is precisely the slow-cooked hazard the standards exist to prevent.
How we repair it
Small failures get repointed with true refractory mortar, the high-temperature kind, because ordinary mortar in a firebox is a repair that un-repairs itself. Cracked and broken firebricks are cut out and replaced individually. When enough of the box has gone soft, we rebuild the firebox: old brick out, new firebrick laid in refractory mortar to the original geometry, since the shape of a firebox is not decorative, it is what throws heat into the room and smoke up the flue. Most repairs take an afternoon; rebuilds usually take a day or two.
The part of the system people skip
Fireplace attention tends to go up the flue, to sweeps and caps and liners, while the firebox quietly does the hottest work in the worst conditions. When we sweep or inspect a Boulder fireplace the firebox gets the same scrutiny as the flue, and if you have never once looked at yours with a flashlight, that is a fine reason to book the free inspection before the burning season leans on it again.

Why does the mortar in my firebox keep crumbling?
Often because a past repair used regular mortar, which fails quickly at firebox temperatures. Refractory mortar is made for the heat; it is the difference between a repair and a subscription.
Is a firebox rebuild worth it on an older home?
